How To Borrow Money From Chime

If you’re looking for a quick spot to cover you until payday, you could borrow up to $200 with Chime 🙌

What is Chime?

Chime is an online-only financial technology company which offers checking and savings accounts. You can pay anyone, set up a direct deposit, automate your savings, and manage your money with Chime.

So, the big question, can you borrow money from Chime?

Yes. You sure can.

Friends gif. Jennifer Aniston as Rachel and Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe jump up and down, clapping their hands and screaming with excitement.

If eligible, you could also get your paycheck up to 2 days early with direct deposit and fee-free overdrafts of up to $200.

(However, this is an overdraft service. Not money straight into your account. If this is super disappointing to you, we'll just mention you can get up to $100 from Cleo straight into your account. Eligibility requirements apply though. Scroll down to find out how to apply for one.)

How does Chime work?

Chime offers a fee-free overdraft service called SpotMe.

It lets you overdraw by up to $200 on debit card purchases without charging fees (unlike stupid banks).

Nice.

You’ll need to sign-up for a Chime bank account and activate your Chime Visa debit card. When you’ve done this, head over to the settings tab in the app to find out if you’re eligible. If you are, you’ll be officially enrolled into SpotMe once you’ve thoroughly read the T&Cs 🙃

Your SpotMe limit starts at $20 and depending on your account activity, history, and other risk factors, it could increase up to $200.

Remember, SpotMe is an overdraft service, so you won’t get cash into your account like you do with other cash advances.

PSA: you’ll need to receive a single direct deposit of at least $200 into your Chime checking account over a 34-day period to be eligible.

💵 Maximum amount: $200
🏦 Fees: option to tip and no late fees ‍
✅ Repayment: your next payday
🔎 Credit check: no
📈 Interest: no

Is Chime safe?

Chime’s partnered with The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC, which are both FDIC-insured. The FDIC protects up to $250,000 of your funds in each bank account, so it’s pretty safe.

But before you leave us, we’ve got a cash advance you might wanna check out. And if you’re a gig worker, here’s why Cleo might just be the best app for you 💎

How to get a Cleo Cash Advance*

The cash advance feature is a part of the ✨Cleo Plus✨ subscription and costs $5.99 per month. Which FYI, is WAY less than overdraft fees.

So if you’re someone who overdrafts regularly, this is for you.

If you manage to avoid even just two overdraft fees a month (around $70), you’ve already basically made back the cost of Cleo Plus for a year ($71.88).

We literally have a whole article which explains how to get a cash advance with Cleo, but it’s pretty simple:

  • Download Cleo and sign up for Plus, type “cash advance” or “spot me” to Cleo in the chat, and follow the prompts
  • She’ll let you know if you qualify for the advance and how much for once she has checked to see you’re in a position to repay on your chosen date. Cleo doesn’t require proof of employment, payslips etc – she just uses an algorithm. And if for any reason you’re not eligible, you can get the $5.99 back if you cancel within seven days of signing up
  • Once you’ve chosen your cash advance amount, it’s up to you when to repay (typically between three to 14 days) ‍‍

The funds should reach your account within four days, however, if it’s an emergency and you need it within 24 hours, you can pay an express fee of $4.

If for any reason you’re not eligible for a cash advance, you’ll still be able to use the free features Cleo offers which will help you improve your financial health. And then if you’d like to, you can reapply in the future 🚀‍

PSA: check again when your latest paycheck has come in. Sometimes that can affect the algorithm.
