Going Back-to-School While Anxious About Money

As Gen Z heads back-to-school this fall, one thing that’s on their minds is the rising cost of living that continues to be a leading cause of anxiety for young people in the US.

Cleo surveyed Americans aged 18 to 28 years old who are either in college or graduated from college about how they’re spending and saving money.

  • Home is where the (financial literacy) is: 51% of respondents get their financial advice from parents or someone they trust, with less than 15% getting it from a bank or financial advisor. On top of that, 61% of respondents reported that their parents or guardians managed their finances up until college.
  • Gen Z cares about money management: 63% of respondents have a monthly budget that they track regularly — and of these, 22% are 18-21 years old.
  • Raising their hand for financial help: 61% of respondents sometimes feel like they’re running out of money and need to ask someone for financial help, and almost 30% feel like they don’t have the right financial support or guidance.
  • Loud Budgeting is in, impulse purchases are out: Despite the stereotype that Gen Z are impulsive spenders on TikTok finds or are lazy when it comes to saving money, the majority of respondents (58%) said they rarely make an impulse purchase. What’s more, almost 40% said they spend $100 - $200 on non-essentials each month.
  • Inflation, inflation, inflation: Further breaking the stereotype of impulse spending, while in college, over 40% of respondents said they are/were the most stressed about having money for groceries and other basic needs, followed by 30% feeling stressed about tuition and school fees, and 20% worrying about social expenses.
  • Regrettable Receipts: When spending money on non-essential items (such as clothing, food and drink, social expenses), 80% of respondents said they’ve felt buyers remorse. Key reasons for this included feeling guilty for buying something they didn’t need, going outside their budget, not using the money for bills, gas and other living expenses, and not putting the money towards saving goals.
